Essay
Our Founding Fathers believed that the jury system is the heart and soul of liberty. John Adams said, "Representative government and trial by jury are the heart and lungs of liberty. Without them, we have no other fortification against being ridden like horses, policed like sheep, worked like cattle, and fed and clothed like swine and hounds." John Adams, 1774. Thomas Jefferson said, "I consider trial by jury as the only anchor ever yet imagined by man, by which a government can be held to the principles of its constitution."
The Seventh Amendment, which guarantees the right to trial by jury, has recently been under attack by politicians and special interest groups who do not want citizens to serve as jurors to determine the outcome of disputes. Please discuss why the jury system is or is not essential to a democratic society. Please limit your response to fewer than 500 words.
